Four domed chambers surround the Taj. The main archways are carved with passages from the holy Koran. The mausoleum building is part of a vast complex with a main gateway, garden, mosque, guesthouse and several other splendid buildings. A large garden is divided at the center by four reflecting pools.

It's generally believed that Taj Mahal, usually translated "Crown of the Palace," is a short form of the name Mumtaz Mahal, which means 'Noble One of the Palace."
