17-year-old son of famous singers convicted of rape
李天一强奸罪名成立 被判10年监禁
The son of two famous Chinese singers Li Shuangjiang and Meng Ge is to spend the next 10 years in jail for rape. The sentence was announced by the Haidian District People’s Court in Beijing Thursday morning. 4 of Li’s accomplices were also given sentences that varied in length.
Being born into a privileged family didn’t guarantee this 17 year old a promising future.
He is going to spend the best part of his youth behind bars.
4 out of the 5 perpetrators are under 18. So the trial wasn’t open to the public in order to protect the minors. Apart from Li, the other 4 perpetrators are going to spend 3 to 12 years in prison. The case has drawn intense public interest from the beginning due to the Li’s family background. And online users have questioned whether the court was pressured into handing out a harsh verdict due to public anger over the crimes committed by children of the elite. The court denies such accusations.
Li’s father Li Shuangjiang is a famous singer from the People’s Liberation Army. And Li’s mother is also a singer in the PLA. The family has a strong military background. When the trial opened in late August, many people pointed their finger at his privileged background.
"Everyone is equal and the verdict should not be affected by his family background and wealth."
"The rich have many more advantages than ordinary people when it comes to situations like this."
"This is cruel. Nowadays, the rich and powerful control our society."
In fact, this is not the first time Li has gotten his family into trouble. Back in 2011, Li beat up a couple and caused injuries during a road rage incident. He was 15 at the time and did not have a driver’s licence. He was then sent to a government correctional facility for a year. His father apologised to the couple and to the public afterwards. But it seems the younger Li didn’t learn his lesson.
The court announced on its Weibo account that Li was the primary perpetrator of the gang rape case and showed no repentance. Therefore he was given the harshest sentence of the 4 under 18.
