South Africans celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela
民众怀念南非前总统曼德拉
South Africans are celebrating the life of Nelson Mandela. Though they are saddened by the news of his death, his accomplishments are much more pronounced. Mourners gather outside of Mandela's house, and reflect on his legacy.
南非民众正在怀念曼德拉的一生 。尽管他们为曼德拉逝世的消息感到悲痛,他的成就却更加影响深远 。悼念者聚集在曼德拉居所外怀念他的精神遗产 。
(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED MOURNER, SAYING: "So I was very sad to hear the news but I'm also happy that he gets to rest in peace, you know it's good for him. But what he did for this country is amazing, he united us all together."

Although Mandela had been ailing for nearly a year, on Thursday South African president Jacob Zuma took to the airwaves and made it official.

NYC, London, DC remember Mandela

People in cities around the world are remembering Nelson Mandela after he died overnight Thursday. In Brooklyn New York, diners at the Madiba restaurant pay tribute to the former South African president.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) MUMCY GOUTA MPELEGE, SAYING: "For him to have gone through all that and still embrace forgiveness instead of revenge, that really to me meant something really big."

Later, patrons released lanterns and sang songs in his honour. In London's Parliament Square, people laid flowers in front of a statue of Mandela.

Flowers were also laid at the embassy of South Africa in Washington DC. Mandela died at his home in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was 95.

Hurricane-force winds batter UK, threaten Europe

Hurricane-force winds cut power and wreaked havoc in England and Scotland, as Storm Xaver blasted towards mainland Europe. Strong winds battered Scotland, and killed a truck driver whose vehicle was swept on top of two cars in West Lothian. Four people were injured. Crews rescued stranded neighbors from their flooded homes in Rhyl, north of Wales. Margaret Smith took it all in stride:

Though some residents remained prepared, British authorities said the Thames Barrier would shut on Thursday night and warned people of - quote -"the most serious coastal tidal surge for over 60 years in England". In Germany, Northern regions braced themselves, as the storm approached the coastline, threatening winds of up to 140 kilometers per hour.
