Mixed reaction on smoking ban from residents

Our correspondent Tang Bo has been out on the streets speaking to Beijingers about the new smoking ban. He asked if they think the ban will work and whether they'll abide by the new rules.

"The ban is good. The air in the city is bad enough, smoking makes it even worse."

"As a heavy smoker, the first thing I do when I wake up is find a cigarette. So it’s going to be difficult for me to adapt to the new law. All smokers, including me, must be self-disciplined and abide by the rules. That is the ultimate reality."

"Implementing the ban will not be easy because it’s hard to supervise all public places in such a big city. The only way is to follow the new ban consciously."

"We will not let the regulation impact our interests. We may ask customers to smoke outside and eat afterwards. But we can't be tough; otherwise that may result in conflict."
