Cowhide is sturdy but can seem heavy; lambskin is supple and lighter but more fragile. Choose deeper colors to mask stains and weatherproof the bag according to the designer's directions, she cautions. 'Stay away from suedes,' she says. 'The matte surface picks up dirt and can rub and get nubby.'
