216.Talk Me out of It!
216.劝我别去！
John was trying to talk Jane out of going on the talk show, but he wasn't having much luck. Even when he started to talk a mile a minute, she still didn't listen.
约翰正在劝简不要上那个访谈节目，可是他的运气不怎么好。即使他开始说话像连珠炮，可她还是不听。
"You're taking up my time, John! Now leave, I have to take a shower and get ready!"
“你占用了我的时间，约翰！你走吧。我得洗个淋浴、做好准备！”
But I have to talk some sense into you! They're going to humiliate you on that show! They took your measure in those preliminary meetings and you're just padding! They just want you there to take up space! That other guy is the one everyone wants to see!
“可我得和你讲道理！他们会在做节目的时候羞辱你的！在头几次见面的时候他们已经估计过你的能力，你不过是个陪衬！他们只想你到那里占个地方！另外那个家伙才是大家想见的人！”
"Shut up! Take wing before I kick you out myself!" she said.
“住嘴！在我把你赶走之前你自己离开吧！”她说。
Fine，fine! John said, not wanting to talk back to her anymore. And then he left. As he was leaving he almost went back to try again! But then he decided that Jane should go her own way!
“好，好！”约翰说，他不想再跟她顶嘴。然后他就走了。走的时候他差点儿又回来再试一次！不过最后还是认为简应该按自己的主张行事。
The following day, after the talk show, John saw Jane at the coffee shop taking up a collection for orphaned blind children.
第二天，在访谈节目之后，约翰在咖啡店看到了简，她正在为没有父母的肓童孤儿募捐。
What's this? John asked.
“这是怎么回事？”约翰问。
You didn't watch the show? Jane replied sheepishly. "It was a disaster. Somehow I started talking off the top of my head to try and convince them that I was somebody interesting. Now they think that I'm this big charity woman forming a new school for the blind! If I don't try, the whole world will know I was a fake!"
“你没有看节目吗？”简窘迫地说。“那是一场灾难。不知怎的，我开始即兴劝他们说我是个令人关注的人。现在他们认为我是个有名的慈善女人，正为盲人建一所新学校！如果我不试一下，全世界都将知道我是个骗子！”
John held back a laugh. But he was only able to talk out of the comer of his mouth, his face wanted to laugh so hard!
约翰强忍着笑。但他只能用嘴角说话，他的脸实在是想笑！
I didn't take a hand in any of this! I tried to stop you! he replied.
“这事儿我可没有参与！我还劝过你不要去呢！”他答道。
Jane almost punched him!
简差点儿给了他一拳。
You should have tried harder!
“你应该多使点儿劲劝我的！”
