一.steal:v.偷, 窃取 n.偷窃, 便宜货, (欺诈的)政治交易
【词义辨析】
rob, steal, plunder, deprive
这些动词均含“偷，抢，夺”之意。
rob最常用词，指用暴力恐吓或哄骗等非法手段抢夺财物。
steal普通用词，指暗中行窃。
plunder指大规模或大范围地掠夺。
deprive多指夺去或扣留别人拥有或可能拥有的有价值或必需的东西，也可用于指抽象的事物。
【例句用法】
Despite fine acting by several well-known stars it was a young newcomer who stole the show.
尽管几位名角演出都很出色，却未曾想竟让一名新秀抢尽风头。
He stole a glance at the pretty girl across the table.
他偷偷地看了一眼桌子对面那个漂亮的女孩。
二.provide:v.供给, 提供, 准备, 规定, 抚养
【语法用法】
provide作及物动词时，指“规定”，后可接that从句。值得注意的是从句中要用shall/should，不用will/would，偶尔可用虚拟现在式。
The contract provides that only the best materials shall be used.
The contract provides that only the best materials be used.
合同规定说只允许用最好的材料。
provided可作连接词，原属于provide的过去分词， provided ...或provided that ...指“规定或以……作条件”。当用于正式英语中时，provided .../provided that ...可等同于“if...”。
I will go provided (that) you will go with me.
I will go if you will go with me.
两句意思一样，但注意两者不能随便替换。
What will happen if they see us?
句中的if不可以替换成provided。不过通常来说，用provided的场合，用if都是可以的。
【错句举例与错句分析】
错句: He has a family of four to provide to.
订正: He has a family of four to provide for.
翻译: 一家四口需要他来赡养。
分析: 表示“赡养”时，用provide for，而不是provide to。
【词义辨析】
supply, provide
两者均可表示“供应；供给”，指对于缺乏或不足的事物进行补充或供给。
supply常与to／for或with连用，其结构是：supply sth．to／for sb．或supply sb．with sth.
They supply food to／for the survivors．＝They supply the survivors with food.
他们供应食物给幸存者。
provide常与for或with连用，其结构是：provide sth．for sb．或provide sb．with sth.
He provides food and clothes for his family．＝He provides his family with food and clothes.
他给家人提供衣食。
【例句用法】
The government has to provide against a possible oil shortage in the coming months.
政府须为未来几个月中可能出现的油荒作好准备。
The possibility of the book being translated is provided for in your contract.
在你们的合同中已订定有可能要翻译这本书。
三.access:n.入口, 通道 n.接近(的机会), 使用之权 vt.进入, (电脑)存取
【语法用法】
access与accession的区别：access指“进入，接近的机会”，而accession是接近的意思。
His access to fortune was barred.
他接近财富的机会受到了阻碍。
His accession to fortune had not yet taken place.
他还未接近财富。
accession 经常还有“更进一步”或“增加的”意思，而access没有。
【错句举例与错句分析】
错句: The only access for that building is along that muddy track.
订正: The only access to that building is along that muddy track.
翻译: 到达那个建筑物的唯一途径是沿着那条泥泞的小路前行。
分析: 表示“到达某处的途径”一般是access to sth。
【例句用法】
As her private secretary he has access to all her correspondence.
他是她的私人秘书，能接触到她所有的信件。
I can't access the file on your company because I've forgotten the code.
