The next day as soon as rosy-fingered Dawn shone forth, Calypso gave Ulysses tools,

showed him where he might find great trees, and helped him build a raft. Calypso wove the sails,

He proceeded joyfully on his way for seventeen days. But Poseidon spied him and was angry to see him so near the end of his troubles;

so he sent all the winds of heaven down upon him. The raft was wrecked, and Ulysses was thrown into the sea.

For two days and nights he swam, Athena helping him, and on the third day a great wave bore him to the shore.

Close to the river there was a wood. Here he found two olive bushes so closely grown together that neither sun nor rain could pierce through.

Under these he crept, and covered himself with leaves. Athena sent down sleep upon his eyelids, and he rested after his toil.

THE PHAEACIANS

Now Ulysses had chanced upon the land of the Phaeacians. The king of this country, Alcinous by name, had five sons and one daughter, Nausicaa.

One morning Nausicaa and her maidens took some clothes to the river to wash them.

But when they had nearly ended their play, the princess, throwing the ball to one of her maidens,
