【词语用法】
fairly，quite，rather以及pretty的比较：
四个词均属于程度副词。
Fairly一般修饰形容词与副词，表示很一般的程度。
“How was the film?”
“Fairly good. Not the best one I’ve seen this year.”
quite一般修饰动词和名词，表示的程度要比fairly深一点。
“How was the film？”
“Quite good. You ought to go.”
rather一般修饰动词（尤其时感观动词）和名词，表示的程度比quite要更强烈一点，意为“比预期的还要多一些”。
“How was the film?”
“Rather good. I was surprised.”
pretty是非正式用语，修饰形容词与副词，表示的程度与rather相当。
“How’s things?”
“Pretty good. You OK?”
可以有“quite right”与“all right”的表达方式。“quite right”指的是all right，而“all right”指的是quite right。偶有人会用“quite all right”，但表示的是all quite wrong。不过因该说法不合理，应尽量避免。

【词义辨析】
desire, wish, hope, expect, want, long,
desire: 语气较正式庄重，着重渴望的力量与热切，常含有强烈的意图和目的。
wish: 语气较弱，多指难于实现或不可能实现的愿望。
hope: 指对愿望实现有一定信心的希望。
expect: 通常指有很大程度的把握，但仍含有预料之意，或预计某事或某行动的发生。
want: 一般指所想要的东西是切望得到的东西，能弥补实际需要。
long: 语气强，指极殷切地盼望着，这种盼望侧重于很难或不可能得到的东西。有时也指一般愿望，但含一定感情色彩。
【例句用法】
1.I expect I will be back on Sunday.
我预计我会在周日回来的。
2.I will do what is expected of me.
我会尽本分的。
3.The journey was not as nice as we had expected.
