Hey, I'm Trace and this is dNews and if you saw someone in trouble, would you help them?

I mean it's kind of a double-edged sword, but being a good Samaritan can have its rewards, but also its punishments.
Ki Suk Han was pushed off a New York subway platform this week and he was struck by an oncoming train and killed.
There were photos of this incident that showed up on the cover of the New York Post
and the photographer took a lot of flack for taking them.
The photographer has defended his action,
saying that he was flashing the camera to try and get the driver to stop,
which I guess would be his instinct as a photographer.
Oh, my god, a disaster, take pictures.
Could he have saved him? Maybe, maybe not.
But not everyone is cut out to be a good Samaritan.
We'd like to think that we can help, but a lot of it has to do with our mental state at the time.
For example, here in DC a man fell on the tracks in the DC metro,
and an ex-marine, who used to work for a public transit system happened to be on the other platform,
jump down, navigated his way across and saved him.
He had the know-how, the mental state and the training to do that.
Scientifically speaking, saving someone has a lot of excellent neurochemical benefits,
even in something as simple as donating to charity causes your brain to squirt out all sorts of great chemicals that make it feel rock.
But in a situation of extreme danger, your brain is drowned in chemicals that shut off higher functions.
We literally get stupid when there is in a danger around.
Sometimes it's worse to help than it is to just stand by.
It's not always sunshine and unicorns.
On Halloween of 2008, two women left a California bar at 1:30 in the morning and got in two separate cars.
Soon after the first car hit a light pole
and the woman in the second car, thinking the first car was going to explode, pulled her friend out of the wreckage.

1

The woman in the first car later sued her for making her injuries worse.

Even with stories like this, people still save each other,
whether it's from the brain chemicals or the societal pressure to protect one another.
In 2010 a French tourist named Julian de ray was in Manhattan when he saw what looked like a doll fall off a gangplank into the East River,
it wasn't a doll, it was a toddler.
As soon as he realized that, he immediately stripped down and jumped into the nasty water and save the girl.
He crawled back out of the water with her and onlookers started taking off their own clothes to give to him to stay dry and warm.
He should have gotten a medal for just going in that water, uhhh.
If you do find yourself in a dangerous situation, make sure that you're working to help the victim, not to be the hero.
Don't do CPR unless you know what you're doing.
除非你懂CPR(心肺复苏),否则不要上手。
Don't move an injured person unless they're in immediate danger, like from a fire or they're about to be hit by a train,
or, you know, their snowspeeders about to be stepped on by an at-at Walker.
This isn't in a normal situation.
