You shall go to the ball.
Mini English Lessons
Lots of my students have been asking me if they can use the word "shall" to talk about the future.
And the answer is you can, but nobody really does anymore.
In this Mini English Lesson, I'm going to tell you the two situations where you can use "shall" nowadays.
Shall we begin?
You have probably seen shall in old stories to talk about the future.
For example, if you read a book by Jane Austen or Charles Dickens,
or if you watch an old fairy story where the fairy godmother says to Cinderella: You shall go to the ball.
This is the future, but we don't use it very often like that now.
We use shall for offers or suggestions.
It's always used with the first person.
That could be singular, I, or plural, we, and it's normally in question form.
So for an offer, if you see someone carrying something heavy, you might say, Oh, shall I help you?
And for a suggestion, if you're planning to meet a friend, you might say, Shall we meet at the cinema at eight o'clock?
So there you go, the two situations when you use shall in modern English.
Now you're ready to look at how we really do talk about the future in English.
Shall we?
