All great stories have background and foreground.

In the background, we set the scene.
在背景中，我们设定了场景。
We introduce the time, the place, the people.
我们介绍时间、地点、人物。
And then in the foreground, there's a change.
然后在前景中出现变化。
I want to show you a technique that you can use to create exciting stories.
我想向你展示一种技巧，你可以用它来创作精彩的故事。
And it involves using the past continuous to set the scene and the past simple to introduce a change.
这个技巧涉及用过去进行时来设定场景，用一般过去时来引入变化。
You're going to hear one story, two versions.
你将听到一个故事的两个版本。
Version one, only the past simple.
版本一仅使用一般过去时。
But version two is the past continuous and the past simple together.
版本二是过去进行时和一般过去时一起使用。
Let's go.
开始吧。
John was nearly sixty, and he wanted a change.
约翰快六十岁了，他想要做出改变。
He lived in London.
他住在伦敦。
He lived in a huge apartment.
他住在一间很大的公寓里。
He made a ton of money, but he didn't enjoy his life.
他赚了很多钱，但他并不享受自己的生活。
So one day, he made a decision.
于是有一天，他做了一个决定。
He decided to leave London and buy a house on the coast.
他决定离开伦敦，在海边买一栋房子。
Okay. This is a little bit flat.
好的，这个故事有点平淡。
Everything happens at the same time.
所有事情都在同一时间发生。
There's no background, and there's no foreground.
没有背景，也没有前景。
The sequence of events is not clear.
事件的顺序并不明确。
So let's listen to that story again with the past continuous and the past simple together.
那么让我们再听一遍这个故事，把过去进行时和一般过去时一起使用。
John was turning sixty, and he was looking for a change.
约翰快六十岁了，他正在寻求改变。
He was living in London in a huge apartment.
他一直住在伦敦的一间很大的公寓里。
He was making a ton of money, but he wasn't enjoying his life.
他平时赚很多钱，但他并不享受自己的生活。
So one day, he made a decision.
于是有一天，他做了一个决定。
He decided to leave London and buy a house on the coast.
他决定离开伦敦，在海边买一栋房子。
Much better. In the background, we find out the when, the who, the why.
好多了。在背景中，我们发现了时间、人物、原因。
We set the scene.
我们布置了一个场景。
He was living in London. He was making a ton of money. He wasn't enjoying his life.
他一直住在伦敦，平时赚很多钱，但他并不享受自己的生活。
And then there's change in the foreground.
然后在前景中，发生了变化。
He decided to move to the coast.
他决定搬到海边。
We use the past continuous to set the scene.
我们用过去进行时来设定场景。
And it has the structure subject plus was or were plus the -ing form.
过去进行时的结构是主语加was或were，再加动词的ing形式。
And then the past simple introduces a single change in the foreground.
然后一般过去时在前景中引入了一个变化。
