Paula: It has been said that changes in the style of clothing, especially clothing for women, reflect the culture of a historical period. What do you think?
Evelyn: I would agree. Clothing is not only about utilities, but also aesthetics. Women's clothing in particular holds up a mirror to the beliefs of the time and women's position in society.
Paula: Can you illustrate that?
Evelyn: For example, in the Han dynasty, officials wore silk garments with specific rules on color; while farmers, merchants and scholars dressed in the same style. Silk is a symbol of distinction. Rules on color and style signify the social hierarchy.
Paula: That's right. What about in other times?
Evelyn: Let's take the Tang Dynasty as another example. People's clothes were more varied than before because the society was more open and received influences from other countries.
Paula: I know women's clothing at that time is very showy, made of exquisite materials and the collar is often quite low.
Evelyn: Moral restrictions were loosed on women during this period. And sometimes women were even allowed to dress like men.
