Let's go!
Jack: Oh! No. There's Bonnie Margolin. A year ago, some mutual friends of ours fixed us up because they thought we would hit it off. Unfortunately, she was on the rebound, so I didn't want to get involved. I tired to let her down easy but she got furious and started screaming at me. Oh, no! She's coming. Run!
To hit it off means to quickly become good friends with someone or to form an immediate, positive connection with someone. 要表示“和某人一下就合得来”,在短语的后面加上介词with,即:hit it off with someone。
E.g. I just knew you and Haley would hit it off—you two have so much in common.
Ps : have something in common:
E.g. I'm so glad that you hit it off with my father. He isn't always the easiest person to get to know.
Ps :get to know:了解;认识
E.g. He took her out on a date but they didn't really hit it off.(他约她出去过一回,可是他们好像不大合得来。)
Ps : take sb. out on a date:
E.g. John and Mark hit it off as soon as they met.Now they're very close friends.(约翰同迈克一见如故,现在他们是好朋友。)
Ps : hit if off as soon as sb. and sb. meet (right from the start) :
A: Look how John hit it off with Mary.
B : Yes, they really hit it off.(是的,他们真的合得来。)
那么,“They thought we would hit it off.” They thought we would enjoy each other's company.
Well, that is all for today. See you tomorrow!
