Philippine special envoy apologizes over fisherman's death

Amadeo Perez, on behalf of Philippine President Benigno Aquino, has arrived in Taiwan to apologize to the family of a Taiwan fisherman killed by the Philippine coast guard in May.
Perez and family members of Hung Shih-cheng have held a press conference after Perez visited the home of the victim in Pingtung county, south Taiwan. He delivered a letter of apology from Aquino to Hung's family.
According to Taiwan media, compensation worth more than 300-thousand US dollars will also be paid. The fisherman’s family has accepted the apology. Hung Shih-cheng was killed on May the 9th when Philippine coast guard opened fire on his boat in disputed waters.
After the incident, Taiwan imposed sanctions on the Philippines, recalled representatives and stopped hiring workers from the country in protest.
