A 14-meter-tall snow sculpture of Wukong at the Jiamusi Ice-Snow World, Heilongjiang province, has sparked online debate over its exaggerated risorius, with some netizens calling it awkward and unattractive.
The sculptor explained that the widely circulated photos were taken before the sculpture was completed and from unflattering angles, which made certain features appear exaggerated when viewed from below.
His son, Mr Wang, mentioned that the sculpture depicts Wukong in an unfinalized evolutionary form, which is why it doesn't feature the battle boots or jingubang (golden cudgel).
"My father has over 30 years of experience in snow sculpting and has won first prize before. The recent online criticism has kept him sleepless for days," Mr Wang said.
