Researchers have discovered and described a new species in the Acorus genus, named Acorus shannai, based on morphological and plastid genomic data. Led by Professor Long Chunlin from Minzu University of China, the study was published in PhytoKeys on Jan 20.
The species was first found by students at a local vegetable market in southwestern China's Guizhou province. Cheng Zhuo, a PhD student on the team, noted its fennel-like aroma and local name Shannai, commonly planted around homes for use as a seasoning.
A. shannai is distinct from other Acorus species in the A. gramineus group, with key features such as a strong fennel odor and unique fruit and leaf characteristics.
Professor Long explained that a "new species" is one scientifically discovered, described, and named for the first time, regardless of previous human use.
Therefore, even if people have seen or used the plant for generations, as long as it is distinct and has not been formally published under the scientific naming conventions, it can still be classified as a new species.
This discovery contributes to understanding Acorus genus diversity and phylogenetic relationships, while also promoting conservation efforts and ensuring the correct identification of species for consumption.
