语法精讲【虚拟语气】：这是含有让步状语从句才复合句。

主句是：She loves that child，让步状语从句时：though she says she hates him and wishes they were both dead.。在让步状语从句中含有2个有并列连词and连接的宾语从句。在第二个宾语从句“she said she wishes they were both dead”中的宾语从句“they were both dead”使用了虚拟语气。

当主句中有“wish”这个表示“希望，愿望”的词时，后面跟有宾语从句，宾语从句就要使用虚拟语气。该句子中是“直接引语”，是表示对“现在的情况的虚拟”，因此用的是一般过去式“were dead”。

语法精讲【现在分词】：watching the young mother是现在分词短语做伴随状况状语。文中是说一个女人在说到苔丝的事情，同时，这个女人在观望着苔丝。“Say”和“watch”这2个动作再同时发生。

主句“A certain gentleman might have been punished”使用的是情态动词might的过去完成式，might have been punished，事实上这个强奸苔丝的人并没有收到惩罚。
