Taiwan plane crash kills 23, many still missing

TransAsia Airways flight GE235, crashed shortly after take-off from an airport in downtown Taipei. At least 23 people of the 58 on board were killed in the crash. Although officials say fifteen survived. The drama was recorded by a motorist with a dashboard camera. In the last communication received by air traffic controllers, a pilot on the plane says "Mayday, Mayday engine flameout", a term commonly used to describe engine failure after an interruption to the fuel supply. While they remove the debris, officials say they still hold out hope that at least some of those unaccounted for might still be found alive.

Investigators at the scene of a lethal train accident in White Plains are still trying to sort out what happened. Authorities are calling it one of the worst rail crashes in decades in the area. During Tuesday's rush hour just north of New York City -- the Metro-North train hit a car at a railroad crossing. The driver of the car and five train passengers were all killed. There is still no word on why the car was stopped. Authorities say hundreds of feet of electrified rail skewered the first two carriages of the train. Many of the injured were taken to Westchester Medical Center University Hospital where Dr. Ivan Miller says they treated a wide array of injuries.

Roughly 45,000 riders take the Metro-North Railroad's Harlem Line on an average weekday, about 14,000 of whom board north of where the crash occurred. Parts of the train line were closed on Wednesday.

Kiev's Western allies are alarmed over the rebel advance in recent weeks--which all but ended a five-month-old ceasefire. They board buses provided by the Ukrainian emergency ministry.German Chancellor Angela Merkel acknowledges that the situation is getting worse as she continues to push for a diplomatic solution.

But with the battlefield expanding in the east -- there is now talk that the U.S. may provide arms to Ukraine with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry due to visit Kiev Thursday. But the prospect of new arms raises the risk of escalating the war in a conflict that has already killed more than 5,000 people.
