China's national weather authority raises rainstorm alert
气象部门提高暴雨预警
The heavy downpours that have been lashing many provinces over the past weeks look set to continue. Weather authorities on Thursday morning raised the alert level from blue to yellow, the second highest for heavy rain. The wet weather is expected to continue to batter a swath of provinces in the middle and southern part of China.
Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guizhou provinces, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Chongqing Municipality, will see the heaviest downpours. Authorities have been calling for strengthening flood prevention measures in these areas.
Toppling houses and ruining bridges. Angry floods have washed out roadways and fields in Foping county, Shaanxi province. For weeks, death and despair has rained on the people of this small town. 6 people have died, and another 10 are still missing in the heaviest downpour in 60 years. Rocks, trees, and broken furniture are scattered everywhere, and cars have been blown away.
"I opened my door and found the car was blown here by the wind. My neighbor said he saw the car rolled over twice downhill and plunged here"
The rain-trigger mudslide has cut off nearly all the main roads leading to the county. Soldiers using heavy equipment race against time, trying to make way for the relief goods. Similar troubles are seen in Suining county in the south. Crops submerged, trees uprooted and the way home gone.
"The road was shattered by floods around 6 o'clock this morning, I'm here to repair it by myself."
Thousands of people were evacuated overnight in the darkness of a power cut. More rain is forecast in the coming days. But the misery it brings could last much longer.
