59.逃跑
When they had reached a critical point along the river, Catherine finally broke down and cried crocodile tears.
当她们沿着河边到达临界点的时候，凯瑟琳终于支撑不住，掉起鳄鱼眼泪来。
"Come on, Catherine. Don't cry over spilled milk! We can make it across.
"行了，凯瑟琳。别做无益的自悔了！我们会过去的。
I studied the cross sections of this part of the river before we were captured.

I know where it's shallow," Martiia said.
我知道什么地方水比较浅。"玛莎说。
Martha helped Catherine stand up. It wasn't so cut and dried crossing the river, however.
玛莎扶凯瑟琳站了起来。但是，过河的事并不是那么事先准备好的。
Crowding out fears of drowning, they tried to cut across the river until the water was up to their shoulders.
她们排除掉可能被淹死的恐惧，试着抄近路过河，直到水没到她们的肩膀。
That's when the water finally swept them away.
就在这时她们终于被水冲走了。
It never crossed their minds that they would survive, but after the river culminated in a small waterfall, the girls were able to crawl out on the other side.
她们永远都没有想到她们会死里逃生，可是当河水在一处小瀑布形成最高点之后，姑娘们得以从河对面爬出来。
"But how will we find a boat to cross the lake?" Catherine asked.
"我们如何才能找到船过这个湖呢？"凯瑟琳问。
"Let's cross that bridge when we come to it.
"船到桥头自然直。
First we have to get through this next jungle!"
首先我们得设法穿过下面这个丛林！"
The next day, back in the village by the lake, the main hall was crowded with the rest of the team.
第二天，她们回到了湖边的村庄，大厅里挤满了其他小组成员。
But they didn't know the girls had been kidnapped. Instead they were angry that they weren't there.
但他们不知道姑娘们被绑架了，相反还为她们的缺席而生气。
They were just crossing their names off the list of research students to present their ideas for new classes to the curriculum committee, when a voice cried them down!
他们正准备把她们的名字从研究者名单上划掉，取消她们向课程委员会就新课设备的事提意见的资格，这时一个声音喊叫着不让他们讲下去！
"Stop!" Martha yelled. "Don't cross us out yet! We're back!"
"等一等！ "玛莎喊道。"先别开除我们！我们回来了！"
And then she explained to everyone where they had been.
接着她向大家解释她们去了哪里。
They didn't believe her at first, but when no one could cure Catherine of the shakes, they noticed that she was traumatized.
开始他们还不信，但是看到谁也消除不了凯瑟琳的颤抖，他们发现她受了很大的精神打击。
Then they were amazed that the girls had escaped and made it back alive!
这时他们才吃惊地了解到姑娘们原来确实是死里逃生！
