Director David Lynch has died.

His family shared the news of his passing on Facebook, saying, "There's a big hole in the world now that he's no longer with us.

Variety reports Lynch suffered from emphysema, and stated last year that he would not be able to leave his home to direct anymore.

Born in Montana, Lynch was reportedly drawn to the arts and spent years as a painter before breaking into filmmaking in the 1970s.
