Droppin' a beat! Boots and cats and boots and cats...
来个节奏!靴子猫子,靴子猫子……
Both, and, either, or duh duh duh duh and so much more. Yeah!
两个,而且,任一,或。哒哒哒哒等等许多,耶!
Unfortunately, I'm not gonna teach you how to rap today, but we are going to talk about correlative conjunctions.

Correlative conjunctions are great tools that will help you link two similar elements together.
关联词是很棒的工具,可以帮助你将两个相似的元素连接在一起。
So today we're going to review both and, either or, whether or, and neither nor.
今天我们要回顾both and、either or、whether or和neither nor。
They're the dynamic duos of English.
这些词是英语中的活力二人组。
Just think of salt and pepper or ketchup and fries.
想想盐和胡椒,或者番茄酱和薯条。
First, let's talk about both and.
首先看both and。
Perfect to link two similar or positive elements together.
这组词很适合将两个相似或肯定的元素联系在一起。
For example, both SZA and Macklemore are great singers.
例如:诗莎和马克莫尔都是很棒的歌手。
Why choose one when you can enjoy both of their music?
当你可以同时欣赏这两个人的音乐时,为什么要只选一个呢?
Number two, either or.
第二,either or。
Now this is all about decisions and choices.
这组词是关于决定和选择的。
Okay, kids. We can either vacation in the Bahamas or in Hawaii.
好的,孩子们。我们可以在巴哈马或者夏威夷度假。
It's all about options.
这是选择。
Next up, neither nor.
接下来,neither nor。
Just think of it as the complete opposite of either or.
只需要把它想成是either or的完全对立面。
Here we're linking two negative elements or items together.
这组词将两个否定元素联系在一起。
Oh my god! Are you gonna go out with him?
哦,我的上帝!你打算和他去约会吗?
Girl, he's neither cute nor funny. Why would I go out with him?
姐妹,他既不可爱也不风趣。我为什么要和他去约会?
Last up, whether or.
最后,whether or。
Now this is also about options, and you can use it in decision making process.
这也涉及到选择,你可以在做决定时使用它。
Okay, let's review a couple of rules that you need to know in order to use correlative conjunctions correctly.
好的,让我们复习一些需要知道的规则,以便正确使用关联词。
Number one, balance similar elements.
第一,平衡相似元素。
When using correlative conjunctions, you're going to link two similar elements together, whether they're nouns, adjectives, different clauses, etcetera.
使用关联词时,连接在一起的两个元素要是相似的,都是名词、形容词、从句等等。
Ensure that the elements you're connecting are parallel in structure.
确保连接的元素在结构上是相似的。
Don't say "you can either call me or sending a text" because the elements here are not parallel in structure.
不要说“你要么给我打电话,要么给我发短信”,因为这里的元素在结构上不相似。
So we used "call" and that's in the infinitive form, and then "sending" and that's in the gerund form. That doesn't work.
call是动词不定式,sending是动名词。这样不行。
So you should say "you can either call or send a text."
所以你应该说“你可以打电话或者发短信”。
Both elements here are in the infinitive form: call and send.
这里的两个元素都是不定式:call,send。
Number two, use both parts of the correlative conjunctions.
第二,关联词要两个连用。
Correlative conjunctions come in pairs, so both elements have to be present in the sentence.
关联词是成对出现的,所以句子中必须同时出现这两个元素。
For example, both the book and the movie were excellent,
例如,这本书和这部电影都很棒,
and neither the book nor the movie were any good.
这本书和这部电影都不怎么样。
Number three, ensure subject verb agreement.
第三,确保主谓一致。
Verbs in correlative conjunctions typically agree with the nouns closest to the verb.
在关联连词中,动词通常与最靠近动词的名词保持一致。
This is also known as the rule of proximity.
这也被称为就近法则。
Now I said typically because the correlative conjunction "both and" does not follow that rule.
我说通常,因为both and并不遵循这个规则。
Both the cat and the dog are cute.
猫和狗都很可爱。
So here cat and dog are both in the singular form.
在这里,猫和狗都是单数形式。
However, we're going to use the verb are.
但我们用的动词是are。
When using both ands, the verb is always going to be in the plural form,
用both and时,动词总是复数形式,
regardless whether the nouns in the sentence are in the plural or the singular form.
无论句子中的名词是复数还是单数形式。
So now that we're done with both and, let's talk about the rule of proximity.
现在我们已经讲完了both and,让我们来谈谈就近原则。
It's when the verb in the sentence agrees with the subject closest to it.
就是句子中的动词与最接近它的主语保持一致。
Either the cat or the dog is gonna get adopted today.
要么这只猫,要么这只狗今天会被领养。
Neither the teacher nor the student is available for the meeting.
老师和学生都没空参加会议。
Whether the manager or the employee is responsible for that mistake remains unclear.
是经理还是员工对那个错误负责,还不清楚。
Correlative conjunctions add structure and pizzazz to your sentences.
关联词为你的句子增添结构性和活力。
They're tools for clearer and more effective communication.
它们是让沟通更清晰、更有效的工具。
Whether you choose to use them or not, that's up to you.
无论你选择使用还是不使用它们,这取决于你。
But...but please do. Please do.
但是……请一定要用。
And do it in the comments. Okay? See you!
并且请在评论里用一用。好吗?再见!
