Athens sails into the Christmas season
Athens launches into Christmas with an old tradition - the lighting of sparkling ship. For decades in Greece, boats adorned with Christmas lights were the centerpiece of homes instead of Christmas trees. For many, it will be a difficult Christmas this year in Greece due to the economic crisis that sparked job losses and wage cuts. Athens' mayor, George Kaminis, is more hopeful about 2014, now that the government is forecasting a surplus.
SOUNDBITE: Athens Mayor George Kaminis saying (English): "We are full of hope, we are persuaded that we are going to have the first signs of recovery, during the first months of the year, so we remain optimistic, we remain joyful, and we are going to have a wonderful Christmas, at the same time supporting our citizens here; Greeks and foreigners, immigrants, whoever is in need."
Officials say the Christmas lighting in the square was done on a tight budget, far from the grandeur of the years before the financial crisis.

U.S. suspends non-lethal assistance to northern Syria
The U.S. confirms Wednesday that it has suspended all further deliveries of non-lethal assistance into northern Syria. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the administration is concerned about reports that U.S. contributions are ending up in the hands of Islamist fighters.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) WHITE HOUSE SPOKESMAN JOSH EARNEST , SAYING: "The United States has suspended all further deliveries of non-lethal assistance into northern Syria. At the same time it is important for people to understand that our humanitarian assistance which is distributed through international and non governmental organizations including the United Nations is not affected by this suspension."
Britain joined the U.S. in the suspension. The rebel Free Syrian Army said the moves were rushed and mistaken. A spokesman said "We hope our friends will rethink and wait for a few days when things will be clearer."
The suspension underlines a crisis for the Free Syrian Army leadership, which needs international backing to reinforce its credibility and to stop its fighters joining al Qaeda-backed Islamist militants who now dominate the war with President Bashar - al Assad.
