Ukraine vote credibility questioned
乌克兰投票可信性遭质疑
In the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk there's a celebratory mood among some a day after a referendum on self-rule. Pro-Moscow separatists are insisting what they call the People's Republic of Donetsk is now an independent state. That view isn't shared in Kiev or further afield. The U.S. says it doesn't recognise the referendum results.
自治全民公投一天之后,乌克兰东部城市顿涅茨克一些人群中弥漫着庆祝的气氛 。亲莫斯科分裂分子坚持称顿涅茨克人民共和国现在是一个独立的国家 。而在基辅和其他地方,人们则不这样认为 。美国表示,他们不认可公投结果 。
(SOUNDBITE)(English) WHITE HOUSE SPOKESMAN JAY CARNEY SAYING: "The so-called referendum to which you refer are illegal under Ukrainian law and a transparent attempt to create further division and disorder."

The European Council's president echoed that sentiment.

Britain's Foreign Secretary was scathing about the credibility of the poll.

The situation in eastern Ukraine is increasingly tense. These Ukrainian troops and National Guard members are controlling a checkpoint on the outskirts of Slaviansk. It's a rebel stronghold that's seen fierce fighting over the past few weeks. Ukrainian troops are accusing the separatists in Slaviansk of attacking them while using residential areas as shield, preventing return of fire.

Nigera arrests bomb suspects

Nigeria's state security service says these men are responsible for a bomb attack at a bus station which killed 75 people. The five men are said to be members of Boko Haram which claimed responsibility for the blast near Abuja. Two suspects are on the run and police are offering a 150,000-dollar reward.

The radical islamist group is waging an insurgency against President Goodluck Jonathan's government. It has threatened further attacks after the one on April 14 and a suspected car bomb in the suburb of Nyanya, killed at least 15 earlier this month. The same group is also blamed for the recent kidnapping of some 200 schoogirls.

At least 75 homes lost to Texas Panhandle wildfire

Fire crews in the Texas Panhandle were dealing with a fast moving wildfire on Monday. It started late Sunday afternoon near the town of Fritch, north of Amarillo. At least 75 homes have been lost, some 1,500 acres burned and more than 2,000 people are out of their homes. But officials were still waiting Monday morning to assess the full situation.

Schools in the immediate area were closed Monday. Fire crews from all over the Texas Panhandle and New Mexico were working to put out the fire. It was 75 percent contained as of Monday morning. No word on what caused the fire.
