Pope tells Philippines leaders to end corruption

Thousands gather outside the cathedral in Manila as the Pope arrives for mass. But away from the roads cleared for Pope Francis, hundreds of activists rally to draw attention to poverty in their country. (SOUNDBITE)(English) CHAIRPERSON OF CIVIC GROUP, ANAKBAYAN, VENCER CRISOSTOMO SAYING SAYING: "They have prohibited the poor from actually meeting the Pope. The have put up barricades and this is ironic because this Pope is the pope of the poor. A Pope that broke the barricade that broke the barriers. Now we are seeing the policemen and the government covering up and prohibiting the people from meeting the Pope." Pope Francis, after meeting Philippine President Benigno Aquino, urged the government to fight corruption and help the poor. (SOUNDBITE) (English) HEAD OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, POPE FRANCIS SAYING: "It is now, more than ever, necessary that political leaders be outstanding for honesty, integrity and commitment to the common good." About 80 percent of Filipinos are Catholic. During his trip, the pope will visit Tacloban which was devastated by last year's typhoon.
