一.near：adj. 近的，近似的，亲近的，吝啬的 adv. 在附近，不久以后，几乎，[罕]吝啬地 v. 接近，靠近
【词义辨析】
close, near, nearby,
close: 语气强于near。指时间、地点或程度方面的接近，有紧靠、相邻的意味。
near: 语气弱于close，也指时间或空间上的接近，但无“紧接，接触”的含义。
nearby: 指距离上很近，近在咫尺。
【例句用法】
1.I've nowhere near enough for the fare.
我的钱肯定不够买车票的。
2.Luckily the van ahead of us skidded off the road on our left, but it was a very near miss.
我们前面的客货车滑出我们左边的路，侥幸没撞上。
3.The job is at last nearing completion.
这项工作终于快要完成了。
4.He is near forty.

二.accident：n. 事故，意外，偶然，造化
【词语用法】
1.accident常指偶然发生的不幸事件，incident则指不是非常重要的事件。如出车祸是accident，在车上遇到长时间未见到老朋友是incident；
2.accident单用时指“偶然”，而没有“不幸”的意思。
She was twenty when accident brought her to the notice of the great author.
3.by accident意为“偶然地”，反义表达方式是by design或on purpose；
4.表达“某人某物遭遇不幸事件”时，加to在人或物前。
There was an accident to the little boy.
5.accident后偶尔接以that从句。
His absence was due to the accident that the letter asking him to come had gone astray.
6.有时意为“偶然成功的人或事”，如a political accident指“一个不靠本领而借偶然机会成功的政界人物”。
【词义辨析】
accident, incident, event, occurrence, happening,
accident: 强调偶然或意外发生的不幸事情。
incident: 既可指小事件或附带事件，又可指政治上具有影响的事件或事变。
event: 可指任何大小事件，但尤指历史上的重大事件。
occurrence: 多指日常生活中发生的一般事件，有时也指偶然发生的事。
happening: 与occurrence相似，多指日常生活中发生的一般事件，有时也指偶然发生的事。

三.desperate：adj. 绝望的，不顾一切的，极其想要的
【词语用法】
1.与hopeless相比，desperate的语气要轻些。
The situation was desperate but not hopeless.
这个情形是令人绝望的，但也不全无希望。
2.desperate后可接不定式，表示“发疯似地想要……”。
When the war was over, Tom was desperate to return to civilian life.
当战争结束的时候，汤姆发疯似的想要回到平民的生活。
be desperate at ...属于固定搭配，表示“因……而绝望”。
【错句举例与错句分析】
错句：He is desperate for the failure.
纠正：He is desperate at the failure.
翻译：他因失败而感到绝望。
