Ebola death toll hits new level in West Africa
The body count is rising in West Africa. The scourge from Ebola shows no signs of stopping.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) WHO SPOKESMAN, GREGORY HARTL, SAYING: "As of last night, WHO had recorded 19,340 cases of probable or confirmed of Ebola in the three-most affected countries, and 7,518 deaths in the three countries."
The epidemic - centered in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone - is the world's worst ever outbreak of the virus. World Health Organization officials see some progress, but remain cautious.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) WHO SPOKESMAN, GREGORY HARTL, SAYING: "There are certain areas which have not experienced cases in a number of weeks now, so we see that with the proper package of control measures and community engagement that we can reduce the cases to a very low number,if not zero - we're never going to say zero until we're actually at the end of the outbreak because we are not sure yet that we are tracing all contacts, and of course as long as there is still one case there's always the possibility of transmission."
The three countries suffer from weak public health infrastructures and widespread poverty, leaving them particularly vulnerable to the outbreak.
Iraqis displaced by IS brace for winter
Winter is coming in Iraq. And for the two million people displaced by Islamic State, unfinished buildings offer the only refuge. Yazidi refugees living here are going into winter with painfully cold memories.
(SOUNDBITE) (Kurdish) DISPLACED YAZIDI FROM SINJAR, KAMILA, SAYING: "We can stand almost everything that happened in the genocide, but taking away our girls. That is the most painful thing."
To make matters worse, aid agencies are struggling to provide for the displaced. The United Nations has raised not even a third of the more than $2 billion dollars it needs to support the displaced Iraqis through 2015. And unless more donations emerge, assistance will have to be cut, leaving many out in the cold.
